I just got invited to Pownce. Thanks to salvatore for that. It’s like Twitter but way better. It allows users to do micro-blogging, and share links and files between each other. You can follow my public profile here. I just wish I could use Pownce also from my Nokia N800 or from my mobile phone. It would be more real-time that way since I’m carrying those with me pretty much all the time. Well, maybe they’ll open an API soon so I could write some client for that purpose then. Btw, I’ve got couple of invites left to share if someone is interested.

Earlier, I wrote about the Raccoon web server that you can run on your mobile phone. I just found out that it has been released as open source. Also the gateway implementation has been released, so now you are no more attached only to the project’s own gateway. A brief look at the gateway install instructions seemed to be quite complicated, but I’m definitely planning to set up one to my home server.
This is the first, but rather small step towards having your mobile phone part of the Internet. Now all we need are flat fee data connections and I think lots of cool new stuff will appear. If you have a Series 60 phone, give Raccoon a try. You’ll be amazed by what you can do with it.

Nokia has released a web server software that you can run on your mobile phone. The software is called Raccoon and it is basically a apache web server for Series 60 phones.

To make you phone truly a member of the Internet, you still need to register it to a server that gives it a URL and makes it possible to make TCP connections from outside to your phone. Sounds complicated and it is, but just blame the mobile operators. Test accounts are limited, but you can apply one and download the software from here.
Here is a default startup page of my mobsite, running on my Nokia 6630.

You can also do lots of cool stuff with the included concept demos. It is also possible to make your mobsite interactive using Python. How cool is that?

I was just browsing through the statistics of my site using Google Analytics and was pleasantly surprised that 60 per cent of the visitor of my site were using Mozilla Firefox. Of course more users all the time are moving from IE to other browsers, but this number felt like too good to be true. Once I opened my site with IE, I understood the reason.
Recently I moved all the images on my blog to Flickr to save bandwidth. Then I also changed the width of the images and for some reason it totally messed up the site for IE. It’s no wonder since we all know how well IE handles CSS etc. Well at first I thought that IE users get what they’ve asked for, but now I’ve edited the site so that it works also with IE. Sorry IE users… I’ll try my best to support you from now on.

I noticed this morning that Google Calendar is available for public. I’ve been waiting it since I heard that it was coming, since I would have liked to use it on my Nokia 770. Unfortunately it does not work yet with Opera browser as you can see from the screenshot below. I need to wait still…

I just noticed that the Extend Firefox Contest has ended and the results have been released. Forgive me if this is old news, but I just found about it. Well, that itself is not the reason for this post. The winner extension of this contest was Reveal and oh boy… it is really nice. What it does is that it shows the thumbnails of the pages in your session history and tabs and allows you to easily switch between them. In addition to this it also includes a really easy to use magnifying glass.
The thumbnail thing is something that I’ve always wanted to see on Firefox. A similar thing exists on the new Series 60 open source web browser for mobile phones. Here is a screenshot of the Reveal extension, but screenshots don’t do justice for an extension like this. You need to try it…

Antonio Gomes has released a 0.1.1 RC1 of Manaos web browser for Nokia 770. Installing it on the device takes a little hacking, but is doable. You can find installing instructions from here. Version 0.2 should fix the installing problems, but I think I might test the 0.1.1 version just to see how well it works. It would be really nice to have a open source Mozilla based browser for Nokia 770.

Firefox is soon getting a P2P filesharing extension called AllPeers. A quote from their site says:
AllPeers is a free extension which combines the strength of Firefox and the efficiency of BitTorrent to transform your favorite browser into a media sharing powerhouse.
Seems interesting. I can’t wait to test this extension. A beta version should be out pretty soon.
