Skype coming for N800

Finnish magazine Taloussanomat is reporting (in Finnish) that Nokia is working together with Skype to get Skype for Nokia’s new N800 Internet Tablet. I also found an official press release on this and seems like Skype will come by the end of first half 2007 for the N800.

    Will it be back-compatible with the 770 ?

    Good question. Lets hope that Nokia does not forget the good old 770. Basically, I don’t think it would be too much trouble to make a version that works on both. Btw… Does someone know whether it is possible to use 770 applications on N800?

    I do not currently own the N770 or N800. I saw the N800 announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show this week. I spent awhile studying the specs, and said I would buy it except for one thing — it does not run Skype. So if Skype is ported, that would seel the deal for me! I plan to use around the house, but my primary motivation is to use it for long vacations.

    While the API’s are probably very similar (if not identical) between the 770 and 800…there might very well be problems with porting Skype to the 770 due to resource concerns. Mainly, memory and cpu power. Time will tell, and hopefully we’ll have an official statement on the subject soon. But right now it’s likely that even the developers don’t know for sure if the 770 will have the horsepower to run the client…it’s likely to be a decision that’s made at the end of the optimization cycle based on test results. Just a WAG (wild-assed-guess) on my part, of course ;)

    Yes, Skype requires lots of horse power. Some of the quite new Nokia phones have had problems with Skype and those probably have pretty much same CPU as N770 has.

    Hi Tomi,

    Might be possible with the 770 Hacker Edition OS if it gets updated to the level of current 2007 OS in N800. Then it might be possible to use the same package as with N800, I guess. I doubt that it would come for the standard 770.
