Hi, my name is Teemu Harju. I'm a 27-year-old engineer from Espoo, Finland and this is site is my contribution to the world wide web. I'll write here about all kinds of stuff that interests me. Python coding is my passion. I'm also interested in different kinds of web technologies.

About summer, Nokia 770, Python and GPS

Huh, man it has been a hot summer here in Finland. It has been something like 30 degrees centigrade for a month now and I’m sort of thinking that this starts to be enough. Anyway, I haven’t been writing to my blog for quite a while now. I was on a vacation for some time and in couple of weeks I will go out for some more. Meanwhile, a lot has been happening with the Nokia Internet Tablet. The final version of the 2006 software has been released and now we finally have also a almost fully functional Python runtime for the Maemo 2.0 platform as well. Now it is time to start making some serious Python applications for the Nokia 770.

I bet that everyone that has the Nokia 770 knows about the Maemo Mapper. I’ve also been using it for some time know and finally yesterday I wen out and bought myself a bluetooth GPS receiver so that I can fully utilize the power of Maemo Mapper. I have to say that I’m impressed. It works like a charm. Btw… the GPS receiver that I have is Insmat InsSiRF III.

Heh… :D You’re right. We Finns are never satisfied. During the winter its too cold and during the summer its too warm.

    Hello Teemu,

I have a quick question for you: I just got the 770 and I have to say. I already fell in love with it. One thing I was trying was this GPS navigation since it has a bigger display. Now I have the Maemo Mapper installed on 2006 release as well as I have GPS unit, same as yours, however I am struggling in how can i download maps in Finland. I would like to have maps for the day to day driving in and around Helsinki,Espoo and the outskirts. Do you think you can help??

    Hi,

Have you set the map URL in the Maemo Mapper settings? You need to do that manually. For example, http://mt0.google.com/mt?n=404&v=w2.21&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d should work. Then you can use “Download area” to download maps from a specific area. Just zoom the map so that it shows the area you want to download and then choose “Download area” and there you can choose which zoom levels you want to download. I usually download levels 2-7, since including level one makes the size of the download rather big. If you have still problems, just ask.

    Hello,

Thanks for the Info. I am able to see the map now with the link you sent me. So thanks for that. But now the problem is if i am trying to download the map its shows quiet lot of a data. Over 2 GB?? I have selected 2-7 zoom level. Any idea how I can make it smaller, of course if I select higher zoom level its smaller but then can I see proper street maps?? (Havent tried on the raod yet, still waiting for my 1 GB MMC)

But once again thanks for the map info that was helpfull.
