Maemo Mapper
gnuite on Itt forums wrote a post about a new GPS application he has been working on for Nokia 770. It’s called Maemo Mapper and I have to say it is a really nice application to have even though you don’t have a GPS receiver. It uses maps from Google and works nice and smooth unlike when you use Google maps via the browser. I cannot really comment anything about the GPS features since I don’t have one, but this application makes me seriously consider purchasing one.

I have newly been familiarising myself with Maemo Mapper, and was not aware that it could use maps from google. Please advise how.
The problem I am having is that it does not allow me to reset the view ‘Area’.
Also, it always defaults to zoom level 11.
Any ideas?

Hi,
You can use maps from Google by downloading the list of awailable maps in the map settings. This way you can use maps also from other services than Google Maps. I think that the default zoom level is the one that you’ve had when you have exited the application.

Hi Vicky,
You need to set the map repositories so you can download the maps. Start Maemo mapper and from the menu choose “Maps” and from there choose “Map repositories” (or something like that, I have Finnish version so I’m not totally sure what the English menu is). Then in the dialog that opens there are four buttons on the bottom. The 2nd button from right should say “download”. Press that and download map repository URLs. Then you can choose which maps to download and start using Maemo Mapper… I hope this helped.

I put the google maps URL in the “URL Format” field, correct? It’s being all crazy and giving “an error occurred while retrieving the repositories. The web service may be temporarily down” popups. Hmm, maybe mine is just all messed up or I’m just doing it wrong, haha.

Sounds like you’ve done it just right. It might be that the server that contains the map repository list has been down or something.
