Streaming MP3s with Nokia 770 Part 2

Ok… since the last time, I’ve done more testing on how I can stream my MP3 collection at home using Nokia 770. So far I have found two additional methods. A good and easy way is to use iTunes and Rhythmbox port for Nokia 770 to stream the MP3 collection that you have in your iTunes library. This is easy to do and doesn’t require anything but installing iTunes on your PC and Rhythmbox on your Nokia 770. Then just enable music sharing from iTunes properties and launch Rhythmbox with some special tricks. Then you are ready to go.

However, I prefer still one other way. That is to install Ampache to your server machine and use the Opera web browser on Nokia 770 to browse your MP3 collection. Ampache creates playlists for streaming the music with the audio player that comes with Nokia 770. Just click on the links and listen. Great about this is that you can also allow your friends to listen your MP3 collection and you don’t need to have iTunes running all the time. Well you need the web server, but if you already have that I recommend ampache.

I’ve had very good luck using the WinAMP/Shoutcast based server/transcoder to setup my own internet radio stations that I can listen to on the 770. I generally have two servers, one delivering 32kbit for BT DUN delivery via a 1X cellphone link, the other at 64kbit for WiFi delivery.

Thanks Michael… I think I’ll check that option too.

Hi Teemu. Have you looked at SlimDevices as a possible solution? I use the slim server to dish up my itunes library over the wireless network to my home stereo. Would be nice if I could use the browser interface from my Nokia 770 but I can’t get it to connect to my laptop for some reason. Will keep trying as I think the slim interface is well done and i’m used to it. slimdevices.com

Thanks Donovan… SlimServer seems nice. I’ll need to test it.
